CP 525 - 30 Day Letter To Appeal

The CP 525 letter comes with your audit adjustment letter. It gives you 30 days to appeal if you disagree with the adjustments. Even if you submit documentation to support your position, you have to monitor the deadline. If an actual adjustment is not made in your favor prior the the 30 days being up, then you need to make sure an appeal is on file with the IRS prior to the 30 days. This way you protect your rights if you and the auditor disagree about the changes. Along with the CP 525, you will also get a report that contains details about the calculations of the adjustments proposed by the IRS.

In the CP 525 letter, the IRS will tell you about the measures or actions that you can undertake if you do not agree with the proposed changes. In the letter, the Service will ask you to sign the agreement and return it to them if you agree with the changes. If you disagree, then you will have to prepare a written protest or appeal, and make sure it has been accepted. I have had several clients who were angry with their representative for failure to make sure their appeal is on file.

It is possible for the IRS to have made errors. Even though you have received the CP 525 letter from the Internal Revenue Service (telling you about the changes that have been made to your tax account), you should examine their findings. Many tax payers do not question the findings of the IRS audits because of the following reasons:

  • The findings of the IRS are correct.
  • The tax payers are not aware how they can respond to the audit.
  • The tax payers do not want to annoy the IRS by getting in touch with them.
  • The tax payers do not know how they can go about sending an appeal to the tax examiner of the IRS.

If you have received the CP 525 letter and you do not know what to do. We can help you interpret any IRS letter and take the necessary steps to resolve your IRS issues. Please call us at 713-774-4467 and let's take a proactive approach to resolving any IRS tax problems you may have.
