CP 518 – This letter follows the CP 515 letter and the IRS is giving  you a deadline to file your return.  If you are not sure what to do, you need to develop a strategy.  Contact Form

The CP 518 is a letter that is sent by the IRS if you do not file your tax return.

This notice is only sent after the Service has sent you the CP 515 letter. Generally, this is the notice that will threaten the receiver with seizure of assets, criminal proceedings, etc, if the recipient does not file for a tax return after getting the notice.

Generally, you will have to respond to the IRS within six weeks from the date of the notice. If you fail to file your return, the IRS will file a substitute for return (SFR) for you.  Even if the IRS does file an SFR the appeal period will run before the collection division gets the case. We can call the collection division and stop collections while you have time to gather your tax information and compare it to the third party payer information the IRS has on you that we download from the computer. We can then prepare a tax return that is in your best interests.

The CP 518 notice will mention the date before which you will have to file for a return, failing to which the IRS will send the case to the audit division. Sometimes, you may not think that you have to file a return after the IRS sends the CP 518 letter to you. In such a situation, we can help you decide if it is necessary to file. Call 713-774-4467 and let’s see what the best strategy is for you.

We open many IRS letters each week and help our clients prepare the best strategy for resolving their IRS matters. If you need any help regarding how you can respond to the CP 518 letter, or any other IRS matters, then do not hesitate to give us a call.
