Addison’s History

The present day town of Addison was first settled in the year 1846. At this time, Preston Witt built a house near the White Rock Creek. In 1902, the community was named in honor of Addison Robertson. Robertson served as the region’s postmaster from 1908 to 1916. The first industry, a cotton gin, opened on Addison Road the same year. Addison was incorporated as a city on June 15, 1953. Addison, Texas, in Dallas county, is 3 miles SE of Carrollton, Texas and 11 miles N of Dallas, Texas. The town is included in the Dallas metropolitan area. As of the year 2000 census, 14,166 people lived in Addison.

Today, Addison is the result of explosive growth of business since the 1980s. Though Addison has only 14,166 residents, daytime population is estimated at over 100,000. Addison has 22 hotels, featuring a total of at least 4,000 hotel rooms and meeting facilities. Addison Airport consumes roughly half of the city’s 11.5 square kilometers (4.4 square miles) and is the third-largest general aviation airport in the nation. Major corporate headquarters in Addison include Dresser, Mary Kay Cosmetics, and Pizza Hut. Other major employers in Addison include Bank of America and Regus. Other companies based in Addison include Jani-King and Palm Harbor Homes. Compuware has offices in Addison. At one time CompUSA had its headquarters in Addison.
